From The Cuero Record:

Owens says Gobblers ready to move on after season-opening loss

First-year Cuero head football coach Rick Owens said Saturday that he didn't get much sleep after Friday night's 49-42 season-opening loss to the Wimberley Texans.

The Gobblers saw their 33-game home win streak snapped after committing four turnovers and costing themselves a touchdown on the second-half kickoff due to a penalty. Still, Owens said the Gobblers left Saturday's team meeting determined to bounce back Friday against Liberty Hill.

From The Victoria Advocate:

CUERO - Cuero coach Rick Owens is aware of the past, but he's more concerned with the present.

Owens had his head coaching debut spoiled in Cuero's 49-42 season-opening loss to Wimberley on Friday night at Gobbler Stadium.

The loss ended Cuero's 33-game winning streak at Gobbler Stadium that dated back to 2003. Cuero's last home loss came in Mark Reeve's first game as head coach, a fact not lost on Owens.

Cuero has a tough player to replace now that quarterback Tyler Arndt has packed up and headed off to play college football at Texas State.

The Gobblers’ new quarterback is named Mason Blaschke, but the real onus for replacing Arndt lies elsewhere. The focal point of the offense now will be running back Trent Jackson, who had a phenomenal sophomore year and seems primed for stardom.

Jackson rushed for 1,750 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2009 while helping Cuero to reach its fifth state semifinal appearance in six seasons. With 176 carries, Jackson almost averaged 10 yards per carry.

Against Calhoun on Tuesday, Cuero's Kelsey Washington brought her A-game

She was hitting the ball so hard that the judges had trouble keeping track of it. Overall, she finished with 20 kills in the match.

Washington's play, and her leadership on the court as one of the team's captains, helped Cuero put the match away.
