Gobblers handed new district rivals by UIL, tough pre-district schedule set

From The Cuero Record:

by Richard Morton, Record Sports
 (Posted Wed 09:24 am)
With football Spring practices just around the corner, the Gobblers schedule has a few changes from last year. University Interscholastic League realignment on Monday has once again had an impact on the Gobblers as well as the rest of district 28-3A.
Being a perrennial powerhouse is not always easy. The Gobblers compiled an astounding 84-11 with Coach Mark Reeve at the helm, making it tough to schedule games early in season. This year under first year Head Coach Rick Owens is no different, as is indicated in the Gobblers non-district schedule which looks more like a rough playoff run then a pre-district warmup.

Cuero Senior and Gobbler quarterback, Tyler Arndt, committed to play for Texas State University Monday evening. A three year starter for Cuero, Arndt led the Gobblers to a 36-5 record as a three year starter.

Tyler took over the Gobbler offense as a sophomore, and led the Gobblers to a 12 – 3 record, and the first of three straight State semi-final appearances. In his first campaign, Arndt threw for nearly 2,500 yards and 23 touchdowns. The yards and touchdowns came with only three interceptions; all coming in the semi-final loss to China Spring. From The Cuero Record:

Rick Owens announced as new Gobbler AD after unanimous board decision

Cuero School District has a new athletic director as a result of action taken by the school board Wednesday night.
With a unanimous vote, trustees named Rick Owens as the district’s athletic director and head football coach. He succeeds Mark Reeve who resigned earlier this month to take a coaching position with Texas Lutheran University.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, trustees completed the annual evaluation and contract renewal of Supt. Henry Lind.
It was a four-and-one-half hour meeting for the board with about half that time spent in closed session on Lind’s evaluation. When the meeting opened to the public, the vote to extend Lind’s contract for another year was approved on a five-to-two vote. Voting in favor were B.J. Drehr, Carlyle Stakes, Emily Davis, Pat Koranek and Gerard Gonzales.Voting against the extension were Lynnie Jalufka and Johnny Blackwell. Lind is currently serving his sixth year as Cuero’s superintendent.

CUERO -- Rick Owens has been part of Cuero's athletic success during the last five years and he wants to make sure it continues.

Owens was named Cuero's athletic director and head football coach by a unanimous vote of the school district's board of trustees at their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday night.

Owens, 42, came to Cuero from Rockport-Fulton in 2005 as the offensive line coach under Mark Reeve. He received a two-year contract to replace Reeve, who resigned earlier this month to become the assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator at Texas Lutheran University.

Owens was the only coach interviewed for the position after offensive coordinator Travis Reeve withdrew from consideration.
